Friday, 30 May 2025 – Pakarang Beach, Phang Nga, Thailand: The waves and weather were absolutely perfect, with sunshine and consistent 3-4 foot sets and little to no wind for the majority of day, resulting in heaps of exciting performances from both shortboard and longboard divisions on Day One of Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol Thailand.
Competition got underway at 7:30 am under overcast skies and slightly bumpy conditions that soon turned to bright sunshine and glassy waves, with 24 heats run before calling it a day at about 3:30 pm. The conditions were near perfect for the junior surfers, and brought out the best in them giving them opportunity to push themselves and experience bigger and more powerful waves in a competition setting.
All the Boys Divisions saw action today, as well as the Under 18 Girls Longboards, so all the Semifinals and Finals will run tomorrow to conclude the competition and crown the champions. The remaining competitors have been told to stand by tomorrow morning at 7 am for a possible 7:30 am start.
At 5:00 pm, the opening ceremony was held at the beach with the governor of the Phang Nga province, the sports minister and other officials giving speeches and welcoming those attending the event. Competitors from 10 countries, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Myanmar, USA, Indonesia, Japan and Finland lined up with their flags on that stage to be recognized and welcomed by the governor.
After the opening, Grom Patrol Thailand Contest Director Chatchai Samporn was asked for a few words on how the first day of competition went. “We were so blessed to day,” said Samporn. This is one of the best days we have ever had here, with big waves and great conditions for the competitors. This Grom Patrol event is a great opportunity for our local groms to mix it up with groms from other countries, so they can see where their level of surfing is compared to others…a great learning opportunity for all. We had our safety teams on standby and ready to help if anything happened, but everything went really well. Tomorrow will be very exciting and we all can’t wait to crown champions tomorrow!”
