19 October, 2024 – Uluwatu, Bali: Day Two of the Liga Surfing Indonesia Grand Final presented by Kala Surf Camp and BINTANG Crystal saw a full day of competition with two sets of judges, two separate surfing positions, and two heats in the water for the majority of the day, which resulted in a lot of heats being run and a massive number of highlights for the audience to cheer about.
In contrast to yesterday’s surfing conditions, today showed more classic Uluwatu with waves ranging from 3-6 feet, starting the day with a rising tide and then ending the day at low tide. The Main Peak was the primary bank, and the Racetrack section was the secondary bank.
To start the day, the waves were peaky and the take-off spots were not always consistent, but by the end of the day the Racetrack section turned on and provided turns, barrels and air sections for the Men’s Open Quarterfinals, with Bronson Meydi scoring a perfect 10 points (out of a possible 10) for an amazing backside 306 full rotation aerial on the inside section over almost dry reef. His next best wave was 7 points for a backside barrel, giving him a total heat score of 17 points (out of a possible 10). The crowd was on their feet along the cliff side warungs and restaurants, cheering wildly.
In the same heat, Bingin’s Tommy Sobry scored a near perfect 9.17 (out of a possible 10) for slotting into a deep and long barrel ride on his forehand to place second to Meydi.
A highlight from the Juniors was Kalani Ryan posted two excellent scores at Racetracks in Heat 8 of Round 3, an 8.03 and an 8.63 for a heat high total of 16.66. Also scoring an excellent 8.33 in the same heat was Dylan Wilcoxen, whose heat total was 15.83. Both surfers advance to the Quarterfinals.
In the Under 10’s, it was impressive to see these young competitors fearlessly paddling out to take on waves that were monstrous compared to their small sizes. In Heat 3 of Round 1 it was Jaya Suhendra who took a massive set on the head when paddling out to the peak, but got his revenge by blasting huge turns on a big set wave to earn a near perfect 9.0 points from the judges and win the heat. He scored another excellent 8.0 in Quarterfinal 2 to assure his place in the Semifinals tomorrow.
In Women’s Open action, Taina Izquierdo scored two excellent wave scores of 8.17 and 8.33 at the Racetrack section in Quarterfinal 2 to post and 16.50 heat total, the highest heat score for the Women, and right behind her with an excellent 8.0 score and a total heat score of 15.00 was Kailani Johnson. It’s a sure bet these two will be in the finals tomorrow.
In Master’s action, Rizal Tandjung, Made Dedi Santosa, and Made Nuada won their heats, but the top performer by far was Made “Bol” Adi Putra, whose forehand barrel riding expertise was on full display as he scored two near perfect waves of 9.00 and 9.50 for an amazing 18.50 total heat score.
Tomorrow will be the final day of competition at Uluwatu, and should see slight reduction in swell size, allowing for the Longboard Men’s and Women’s heats to run, then the remaining heats in all divisions will commence to end the competition by late afternoon.
There will be an Awarding Party at Kala Surf Camp after competition has been completed at Uluwatu, so come join in the celebration!
