Day One of Liga Surfing Indonesia 2024 Grand Final presented by Kala Surf Camp and BINTANG Crystal Sees Challenging Conditions and Exciting Action
18 October, 2024 – Uluwatu, Bali: The 2024 edition of the Liga Surfing Indonesia Grand Final presented by Kala Surf Camp and BINTANG Crystal started off this morning in solid 6-8 foot waves and a rising tide, challenging the competitors with strong current and cleanup sets, who thankfully had the Bali Lifeguards on their Jetski assisting them in making it out into the lineup and back in after their heats.
Last year’s Liga Surfing Indonesia Grand Final was run on the sandy beach breaks of Kuta in relatively small waves, so this year’s Grand Final start couldn’t have been more different, taking place in the iconic left hand reef break of Uluwatu and in huge waves. Thankfully the swell forecast for the remainder of the event shows the size diminishing each day, which will no doubt result in some classic perfect Uluwatu, possibly as soon as tomorrow.
The action started off with Round 1 of Men’s Open Division at 8:30 am, with Nusa Lembongan’s Nyoman Agus Frimanto posting the highest score of the round, a 7.17 (out of a possible 10 points) to advance into Round 2, which he also won with a higher score of 7.67. Unfortunately he couldn’t find an equally high score in Round 3, so his run to the final ended today.
In the Masters Division (over 35 years old), it was no surprise that the two highest scores of Round 1 came in Heat 2 from two of Bali’s most well known goofyfooters, Rizal Tandjung and Made “Bol” Adi Putra. Tandjung was the first to slot into and come out of a barrel, earning 6 points from the judges, then added a 5.77 for a massive first turn followed by two solid roundhouse cutbacks. Adi Putra earned his highest score of 6.67 on a big first turn, a short head dip barrel, and a searing roundhouse cutback. Tandjung won the heat, with Adi Putra in second spot. ASC’s Tipi Jabrik found two mid-range scores to win Heat 3 and advance into Round 2.
Round 2 highlights included Bingin’s Tommy Sobry post an excellent 8.5 score, Uluwatu’s Tumbling Sudiantara earning a 6.67 for the first Outside Corner wave of the event, Serangan’s Made Pajar Ariyana with a 7.67 to win Heat 5, and Kuta’s Mega Artana winning Heat 7 with a high score of 7.67 also.

Round 3 was in low tide conditions, which made things tricky but super star Bronson Meydi found a deep barrel to earn him an almost perfect 9.0 (out of a possible 10) points, the highest score of the day’s competition and the highest combined heat score of 14.67 (out of a possible 20 points). Close behind him in Round 3’s top scores was Bingin’s Mega Semadhi, whose heat total was 13.84.
The competition wrapped up at around 5:30 pm, after which everyone headed up to Single Fin to have a few BINTANG Crystals and then head home for a good rest and prepare for tomorrow’s action, which should start at around 7:30 am.
Tomorrow should see a reduction in swell size, allowing for the Juniors, Women’s, and Under 10’s to see action.

Each club runs 5 individual events to determine the rankings in each division, and the top four ranked surfers in each division are eligible to compete in the Grand Final against the other club’s top ranked surfers. The Live Heats online competition program is used by the clubs for scoring the surfers and determining rankings.
The Liga Surfing Indonesia is sanctioned by the PSOI (Persatuan Selancar Ombak Indonesia), operated by the ASC (Asian Surf Cooperative), presented by Bintang Crystal and Kala Surf Camp, with supporting sponsors Single Fin, BGS, Biznet, and the Uluwatu Boardriders.
