Khao Lak, Phang Nga,Thailand (16 July,2024): The 3-day Khao Lok Surf Festival 2024 concluded on the 14th of July with an Awarding Party in front of Memories Bar, where the Sunday afternoon crowd gathered to celebrate the winners and finalists of the Tipi Jabrik’s Grom Patrol junior surfing competition and to reward them with trophies, cash and prizes from event sponsors, and the winners received an special event wildcard (free entry) to the upcoming Grom Patrol events in Bali, which will take place at Kuta Beach on 19-12 July and 26-28 July .
This was a historical event, as it was the first Grom Patrol event to be held outside of Indonesia, a junior surfing series development program for boys and girls that was started in Bali by Tipi Jabrik in July of 2019, and was well attended with over 80 participants from countries including Australia, Finland, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.

The primary sponsors of the event were the Phang Nga Province, the Phang Nga Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports, the Phang Nga Surfing Club (Khao Lak Surf Town), Cobra International, and Rip Curl.

The Grom Patrol competition started on Saturday morning in small low tide conditions at 9 am, after running some qualifying heats on Friday to narrow down the field of competitors to a manageable number for a two day event. As the tide rose, the conditions improved and gave the competitors some fun waves on which to show off their skills, and the competition wrapped up in the mid afternoon at just after 3 pm with all boy’s divisions seeing action and most all semifinalists being decided.
On Sunday, the final day of competition, the morning weather took a turn with strong winds and heavy rain delaying the start until just after 10 am. The waves were definitely a challenge, with intermittently good and bad weather, but by the Finals the sun was breaking through and the best of the best put on a good show for the crowd gathered on the beach, being cheered on their teams and then being carried on their friend’s shoulders as their finals were completed.

In addition to the trophies, cash and prizes from event sponsors, 6 free entries to the two upcoming Grom Patrol events in Bali were awarded to the winners in the 12 and Under, 14 and Under, and 18 and Under boys and girls divisions, so stay tuned and see how they go in Bali!

The ASC would especially like to thank the Province of Phang Nga and their Office of Tourism and Sport for all their support, and to the Phang Nga Surfing Club (Khao Lak Surf Town) for their great effort in making this event a reality, along with Rip Curl and Cobra for providing products for the finalists, and to all the beach clubs and vendors who made the Khao Lak Surf Festival 2024 such a great experience, and last but not least to all the kids and their parents that participated in the event. And by the way, the ASC team had a great stay at the Apsara Beach Hotel and Villas and really enjoyed every morning’s buffet breakfast!
