Monday, 30th June 2025, Afulu, North Nias: The debut of the new Asian ProAm Surf Series begins tomorrow with the Afulu Pro 2025 kicking off the 2025-26 season at Turedawola Beach in North Nias, which will run from 1-3 July.
With a great forecast and pumping waves on offer at both the picture perfect lefthand point break as well as the nearby beachbreak, the Afulu Pro 2025 has attracted 39 participants from countries including Australia, Basque Country, England, France, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the USA in four divisions of competition; Men’s Shortboard, Men’s Longboard, Women’s Shortboard, and Women’s Longboard. There is over $12,000 USD (IDR 200 million) in prize money up for grabs, plus APSS ranking points, so expect some exciting action in the clear blue-green water as the competitors battle it out for the top spot on the podium and the big winners check!
This is the 3rd time the Afulu Pro has been held in North Nias, with the previous events offering Men’s and Women’s Shortboard divisions, but now with APSS sanctioning the event has been expanded to include the Men’s and Women’s Longboard divisions.
Bali’s Pajar Ariyana and Australia’s Willow Hardy are the reigning champions, having claimed wins in both the 2023 and 2024 events. Ariyana is back to defend his title, and this morning’s warmup session show’s he’s more than ready, as he threaded through multiple barrels sections and destroyed a few lips on the 4-5 foot waves.
Unfortunately Willow Hardy sustained a surfing injury in Australia two weeks ago which required surgery, so she is unable to return and defend her title, which means the Afulu Pro will have a new Women’s Shortboard Champion for 2025, in addition to inaugural Men’s and Women’s Longboard Champions.
The Afulu Pro 2025 was formally opened this afternoon in a beachside ceremony, welcoming the participants with traditional dances, speeches by ASC’s Tipi Jabrik, the Regent of North Nias and various other government officials, then the official banging of the Gong to officially declare the start of the event.
