Liga Surfing Indonesia 2024 Grand Final 2023 presented by Kala Surf Camp and BINTANG Crystal Wraps with Halfway Kuta Boardriders Claiming another Club Challenge
21 October, 2024 – Uluwatu, Bali: The fourth annual Liga Surfing Indonesia Grand Final presented by Kala Surf Camp and BINTANG Crystal wrapped up 3 days of exciting surfing competition at iconic Uluwatu by celebrating the divisional winners and the overall club championship at the beautiful Kala Surf Camp resort last evening, where the Halfway Kuta Boardriders claimed their second consecutive Club Challenge as well as multiple individual club member wins.
The 3-day long-weekend event started on Friday with large and unruly 6-8 foot surf, then diminished in size to 4-6 foot and peaky on Saturday and then for the final day on Sunday provided beautiful 3-4 foot conditions, a great test of skill and adaptability for the best boardriders clubs from around Indonesia.
The Club Challenge was held in late afternoon at the Racetracks section yesterday, with Kuta Halfways Boardriders coming from behind to push Legian Boardriders, who held the lead through the majority of the session, down to second spot, while Uluwatu Boardriders finished in third, Pererenan Boarders in fourth, and West Sumbawa Surfing Club in 5th place.
When accepting the Club Challenge award, Kuta Halfways Boardriders Rahtu Suargita proudly hoisted the trophy and thanks all involved for their support, congratulated his club on another great performance, then said to the young groms on the front row while pointing to ASC’s Tipi Jabrik “Without this guy here, none of you would be here right now and enjoying this, as he’s put in so much work over the last more than 20 years so we could have all of this, so never forget that and let’s give him a big round of applause and thanks!”
Just before the Club Challenge got underday, it was Bingin Boardriders Tommy Sobry continuing his dominating performance and winning the Men’s Open Division, putting Kuta Halfway’s Raditya Rondi and Lakey Peak’s Bronson Meydi in combination and leaving Kuta Halfway’s Mega Artana needing a near perfect score of 9.17 to take the win. Sobry ended the Final with a total score of 15.83 for two waves, starting out strong with powerful turns to post first a 7.50 score to jump into the lead, and then close out the final with an excellent 8.33 for even longer wave taking it all the way to the shallow inside.
“I was lucky that Mega (Semadhi) was on top of the cliff and let me know there was a good wave coming,” said Sobry. “I really only got two waves in the final, as it was a bit slow sometimes, so I’m glad I did my best on both of them. I haven’t surfed here at Uluwatu for probably a year actually, so I’m so stoked to win this and want to say thanks to all the boys for supporting me.”
In Women’s Open action, Kailani Johnson from Legian Boardriders took the win over Georgie May Hicks, Jasmine Studer, and Hanasuri Jabrik by unleashing a series of critical lip destroying turns earn an excellent 8.17 score and assure her victory. When asked how it felt to take the win, Johnson replied, “This was more fun than I can even put into words..as usually when I’m out there and the conditions are this perfect, there are at least 50 people out …so to be out with only 3 other people, and to catch the wave I did and win, it was the best feeling ever! I want to thank the Legian Boardriders for letting me be a part of their big supportive family, and for being able to represent them…this win is for you guys!”
Kuta Halfway Boardriders claimed both Longboard Division wins, with Dhany Widianto winning the Men’s and his sister Dhea Natasya Novitasari winning the Women’s. At the awards celebration in their acceptance speeches, both of them stated their hopes that more Indonesians would take up longboarding, so that Indonesia can become more like the Philippines, which has a very strong field of longboarders that includes Jay-R Esquivel, who is on the WSL Longboard Championship Tour.
Winning the Juniors was Kalani Ryan, who impressed the judges all through the event and posted multiple excellent scores, and in second spot was last year’s Junior winner Dylan Wilcoxen, who earned several excellent scores of his own throughout the weekend.
Under 10 winner, Jaya Suhendra was a clear standout, showing mature surfing beyond his years with smooth and critical backhand surfing at the Peak and at the Racetrack. His acceptance speech was also impressive, as he thanked all his sponsor and supporters and the event organizers very smoothly.

Finally in the Master’s action, at a left hand point break it would not be wise to ever bet against Made “Bol” Adi Putra, whose forehand barrel riding expertise and powerful turns saw him dominate the final and land him another trophy to add to his already extensive collection.
Host of the 4th Liga Surfing Indonesia Final was Kala Surf Camp, who were delighted to support the event and Indonesia surfing. In his speech, Kala’s Frank Brueggemann (and on behalf of his daughter Lisa) thanked the ASC for chance to be involved in event, and also thanked the Balinese people for welcoming them to the island and giving them the opportunity to share with the community.
To close, ASC’s Tipi Jabrik reminded everyone that the prize money from individual winners was going directly to the winner’s boardriders club, as the clubs need as much support as possible to nurture upcoming talent and continue the growth of Indonesia surfing. Regarding the success of this year event, “I’m really happy with this year’s event, that we could hold it in such an iconic location of Uluwatu, a world class wave,” said Jabrik “It’s a great reward for the boardriders clubs, where they can really perform and showcase their talents, and we’ll continue to try and host the event in locations that have the best waves. It requires a lot of effort and support, and I really want to thank this year’s sponsors like Kala, Bintang, Ulu Boardriders, Single Fin and the others, and hope that next year we’ll have even more support and have the event in another great location.”
