17 December 2024, Johor-Malaysia: The ASC is excited to announce the KEJORA Surfing Cup 24, a second annual surfing and extreme sport event taking place at Tanjung Balau Beach on the weekend of 20-22 December, organized by the Sinar Tanjung Balau Cooperative (KSTB) in collaboration with the South East Johor Development Authority (KEJORA), the Malaysian Surfing Association (PLOM) and the Johor Surfing Association.
The Tanjung Balau and Desaru beaches are well known to the Malaysian and Singaporean surfing communities, and last year’s inaugural KEJORA Surfing Cup attracted some 70 participants to join in the competition. This year’s event aims to increase that number and see more competitors from other countries around the Asian region such as Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines.
Surfing has rapidly gained popularity in Asia over the last several years, due primarily to its inclusion in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics and in large multinational events such as the SEA Games and Asian Games, resulting in greater visibility and increased support from government agencies. Events such as the KEJORA Surfing Cup offer an excellent opportunity for Malaysia’s growing surf community to compete and improve their performance, as well as increasing the awareness of the worldwide audience about Malaysia as a surfing destination.
The KEJORA Surfing Cup includes the following 6 divisions of competition with a total prize pool of RM 45,000 on offer: Men’s Shortboard, Men’s Longboard, Women’s Shortboard, Women’s Longboard, Groms (Juniors) Under 16 Shortboard, and Bodyboard. There is a registration fee required to enter for each division, but competitors can enter more than one division.
The KEJORA Surfing Cup is much more than a surfing competition, it includes skating and pushbike competitions, a food fiesta, music concerts, a Harley Davidson show, craft demonstrations, fire dances, and more. It’s certain to be a weekend full of highlights and fun, so please come out and join in the festivities; whether your competing, or just coming to cheer on your friends, you’re sure to have a memorable time over the weekend.
“Last year’s KEJORA Surfing Cup 2023 has proven to be a transformative event, fostering awareness of water sports, promoting rural tourism, and boosting the local economy,” said KEJORA General Manager Datin Paduka Hajah Hazlina Binti Jalil. “By aligning with initiatives like MY DESA MY DESTINATION and supporting local cooperatives, the event highlights the region’s potential for sustainable ecotourism. The discovery of local surfing talent and the proposal to establish the Kota Tinggi Surfing Club further demonstrate KEJORA’s commitment to nurturing sports development and engaging the younger generation. This initiative not only enhances Tanjung Balau’s prominence as a surfing destination but also sets the stage for long-term growth in sports tourism in Johor.”
